Passage

La fin de l'été et l'arrivée de septembre sont un passage. Passage à une autre saison, à un autre chapitre de notre vie. Passage dans l'au-delà pour Maman, le dernier jour de juillet. Elle aura vécu une longue vie, bien remplie, d'épouse, de mère et de patriote. Élevée entre les deux guerres dans une famille de mineurs trés pieuse, elle a consacré sa vie aux autres. A ses parents, plus tard à son mari, et surtout à nous, ses trois enfants. Pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale, un groupe de jeunes avait manifesté contre l'occupant à Nantes. Ils furent fusillés. Le Général de Gaulle, sur la BBC, demanda une minute de silence a tous les français. Maman l'observa, au travail, dans le magasin où elle était vendeuse. Elle fut dénoncée par une collègue. La gendarmerie française l'arrêta et la livra à Briey à la Gestapo. Elle fut rapidement condamnée et emprisonnée à la prison de Briey et plus tard transférée à Charles III à Nancy. Elle m,a souvent raconté les circonstances de son arrestation et de son emprisonnement. Quand cela arrive à une jeune fille de 24 ans , ça marque le reste de sa vie.

Maman avait rencontré papa dans l'abri anti-aérien qui était commun à leurs deux entreprises. Mariés après la guerre, ils vécurent plus de 60 ans ensemble.
On ne peut guère imaginer une vie plus exemplaire.

Greed

I am attending a USW congress in Dearborn, Mich.
The tales I heard from union reps about work related injuries and fatalities, 16 hour shifts, and collusion between OSHA and business, point to a return to the Robber barons era. GW's dream: Business without limits. Bottomless profits.
Except that our bridges collapse, miners die underground, an entire city is wiped out by a hurricane and a whole region is devastated by an immoral war.
The common denominator is GREED. At the times of the robber barons, greed , at least, was accompanied by competence. To wit, the construvtion of railroads, the telegraph, the automobile etc...
History, it is said happens twice. Once as a tragedy, s second time as a farce. The farce, alas, is the Bush administration. So preoccupied by its place in History, they are now going to go down as the gang that could not shoot straight.
The washington Post was wondering whether we had turned into the "Can't do nation". We have not.
But it is time for voters to realize the Government is NOT the problem. It is the solution.
The brothers and sisters at USW are drooling here when they hear their Canadian brethren tell them nobody loses their house because of medical bills up North!

L'Euro

J'ai eu la bonne fortune, au milieu de ma carrière, de collaborer à la naissance de l'Euro. Parmi les nombreuses négociations qui ont permis sa naissance, je me rappelle le Sommet de Dublin. Les allemands avaient proposé un "Pacte de Stabilité": des règles strictes que devaient observer les membres de l'Euroland, comme un déficit et une dette réduits. Les membres en infraction se verraient payer des amendes aussi énormes que dissuasives.
Jacques Chirac, qui se doutait que la France ne tiendrait pas le coup longtemps, changea le nom en "Pacte de stabilité et de croissance" et supprima l'amende.

Son successeur, N.Sarkozy, lui aussi essaye de manipuler l'Euro. Il souhaite influencer la banque Centrale de Francfort pour que l'Euro soit dévalué! (Dans les années cinquante la France dévaluait sa monnaie tous les mois ce qui appauvrissait l'État et renchérissait la vie.
L'Euro est aujourd'hui à 1, 38 dollar US. Un record. Mais, alors que l'Euro cher sape la compétitivité de la France, il profite à l'Allemagne qui elle a fait son ajustement économique.

Loin d'être une émule de George W. Bush comme le dépeigne ses adversaires, Sarkozy est un nationaliste Colbertiste classique, qui se méfie du libéralisme économique qui a fait ses preuves aux USA, aux Pays-Bas , en Allemagne et en Espagne. L'État veut garder la mainmise sur un capitalisme "maîtrisé" avec une "préférence nationale".

Dommage.

En berne

Le drapeau Européen est en berne. On a commencé à enterrer l'Europe hier au sommet de Bruxelles. La presse allemande fête le grand succès d'Angela Merkel. La presse française continue à faire accroire à ses lecteurs que M. Sarkozy a réussi à imposer son mini-traité. Les Britanniques crient leur joie d'avoir emasculé l'Europe, et les Polonais, qui ont failli faire échouer la conférence , veulent faire voter les morts!
Triste Europe!
Elle a perdu son drapeau, disparu!
Elle n'a plus d'hymne, effacé!
Le Parlement élu s'efface au profit des parlements nationaux (autrement dit chacun reprend ses billes). Le Royaume Uni n'est plus soumis à la plupart des règles de l'UE.
La monnaie unique n'est PLUS la `Monnaie Européenne.
Il n'y aura plus de Constitution.
Tout le monde veut avoir gagné hier soir.
Par contre je sais qui a déjà perdu: les `citoyens`Européens.
Ils viennent de démonter ce que leurs prédécesseurs, encore sous le choc de la deuxième guerre mondiale, avaient patiemment créé: Un début d'État Fédéral, pour jouer dans la cour des grands avec les USA, la Chine, l'Inde etc..
Au lieu de cela , chacun reprends ses billes, les égoismes nationaux reprennent le dessus. Moi, je nòublie pas la prédiction du chancellier Kohl: "On oubliera la guerre. On démontera la construction Européenne. La guerre reviendra"

Pourquoi , alors que 18 pays sur 20 avaient voté la Constitution, le NON de seuls 2 pays a suffi pour faire capoter ce projet? Est-ce la Démocratie?
Si ce n'était pas si triste je dirais que ce la mentable sommet Européen a été géré par la CIA.

Le Darfour

Une polémique se fait jour en France entre Bernard Kouchner et la gauche a propos du Darfour. Cette région au sud du Soudan est le théâtre d'un génocide. Les musulmans du nord massacrent systématiquement les noirs chrétiens du sud. Il le font avec l'appui du gouvernement Bashir et l'aide autant politique que militaire de la Chine qui a reniflé le pétrole soudanais.
Aux États-Unis, la droite chrétienne, les néocons qui veulent imposer la démocratie au monde musulman 'arriéré' et des artistes dont George Clooney, mènent une campagne pour une intervention musclée. Bernard Kouchner est d'accord. La gauche, bien sûr, se doit de s'opposer aux américains et donc a une intervention pour arrêter le massacre.

Il faut choisir.
Soit on tient à la vie humaine et on accepte une intervention militaire pour arrêter le génocide, soit on ferme les yeux pour être politiquement correct. La gauche française est encore plus bête qu'on le croyait.

En Irak, le président Bush a fait une erreur capitale qui coûte trés cher aux USA, en sang versé, en argent, et surtout en réputation. Cependant, une fois la page Bush tournée, le 20 janvier 2009, que faire?
Doit-on laisser les mains libres aux fanatiques islamistes qui veulent nous ramener au Moyen-Âge ou doit-on tracer une ligne dans le sable?
Les Marines à Baghdad, ou en Afghanistan font un peu notre travail. Est-ce par esprit de culpabilité que nous les critiquons? Si notre souhait est accompli et que l'Oncle Sam replie ses troupes chez lui et ferme les portes, qui reprendra le flambeau? L'armée Européenne?
Le monde sera-t-il plus sûr sans les GIs?
La guerre en Irak fut une erreur. Elle a été trés mal conduite. Pour autant certaines interventions sont justifiées et Kouchner a raison.

The stubborn past.

Today it is Germany's turn to host the G8 meetings.
It has only been 16 years since both German States reunited and it is remarkable that this G8, or G7 + 1 as it once was called, is taking place near Rostock in what once was known as the GDR. The GDR, was in fact a poor excuse for an independant state and was actually a shadow Soviet Republic. Soviet forces were stationned everywhere. I well remember visiting Zerbst airbase and even the vast military camp surrounding Buchenwald.
It appears that Mr. Putin has a certain nostalgia of "the real existing socialism " of Mssrs. Ulbricht and Honecker. Perhaps it is the particular smell of the ex-GDR, perhaps its quaint cobble-stoned streets, or is it the solyanka, still on the menu of this former Russian colony. Whatever the reason, whatever his proustian moment in setting foot in the former "strictest barrack in the Soviet camp", Wladimir Putin will remember the many years he spent as a KGB Resident in Dresden. He must be mildly annoyed to find US warships in the Baltic, and Mc Donalds in the middle of Leipzig.
That could explain his threat to aim missiles at Europe in retaliation to Mr Bush's anti missile facilities in Poland and the Czech Republic.
Or is it perhaps because Mr Putin has had a good look at the map and decided that he was in the position the US were in during the Cuba misile crisis?

Another perennial feature of the G8 is the violent demonstrations led by the so-called anti Globalization movements.These young people are full of the ideals of youth. Unfortunately they can be manipulated by such know-nothing as ATTAC, a movement closer to AlQaeda and the US creationists than is comfortable. Of course they want a world where everybody is equal, in a clean environment, with a decent living standard. But the their solutions are demagogically simplistic. And violence is NEVER justified. Who is not for Mom and apple pie?
As to the African heads of State who are perennially invited at the end of the G8: they are all corrupt. They are mostly incompetent. The G8 leaders pay lip service to them, so that they look good. The new version of the token black.

But all this will change now that George W. Bush has sent us yet another of his Vulcan friends, Bob Zoellick, to straighten out the Worldbank, and reduce poverty once and for all. As Ronald "bedtime with Bonzo" Reagan would have put it: "A rising tide raises all yachts".

Sarkozy "the American"?

Much has been said about Nicolas Sarkozy, the new French president being "American". He visited Washington last year during his trip to the IMF/Worldbank annual meetings,in his function of Finance minister. He took advantage of this trip to be photographed with G. W. , Condi Rice and at Ground Zero in New York. He said publicly that he was an admirer of the United States. This statement drew the ire of his opponents in France, for whom all things American are inherently evil. He was dubbed: "An American neocon with a French passport" by his socialist adversaries.
Just as in the US, the French welfare system is wrongly caricatured as inefficient, American Society is wrongly caricatured in France as being harsh, unfair, unequal and immoral.
American pundits, lately, have expressed the hope that the French will now "go back to work" (George Will), or will replace the British as allied poodles in case of another military adventure. Not so fast.
French socialists have exaggerated the "American" nature of the new president.He has declared himself that he was in favor of some sort of protectionism. He will be a nationalist first (his love for France), and a European second (He met Angela Merkel on the very day of his inauguration). If the only country he mentioned was the US in his maiden speech, it was to invite the Administration to join him in the Kyoto treaty , which shows how little he understands America!
Besides, if he admires the US system, its work ethic, its dynamism and its achievement, he will have a very hard time bringing the French down from their pink cloud of a welfare state, where everybody is at the trough. Since the French have decided that Mob Rule was the true Democracy , rather than the official parliamentary version, you can expect more burned cars, truckers barrages, and other strikes if he tries to change the system inherited from the Communist government of 1936, compounded by the Communist government of 1946 and aggravated by the successive governments of the Vth Republic.
As to a stronger military alliance: French forces are busy enough as it is, thank you very much, fighting "hot" conflicts in the Congo, Afghanistan, Lebanon, without mentionning a heavy presence in a dozen African States.
