Springtime in Washington
For those of you still mired in cold weather, it is springtime in Washington DC.
Not only are we having a great cherry blossom season, but George Mason's basketball team is also blossoming. We, because it is always "we" when the local team is winning, have made the final four of the NCAA. The game yesterday aginst U-Conn was nothing short of a miracle. We were very excited at home, the fans were very excited in DC and the kids were besides themselves in Fairfax.
It is the great thaw.
On a par with the great melting of the ice cap over Greenland, we are witnessing the great meltdown of the vaunted Bush Administration. The Neocons'Founding Fathers cannot find hard enough words to condemn Bush, villify his policies and suspect his very competence. Francis Fukuyama, Bill Kristol, and a few other charter members acknowledge their terrible mistakes. Is it Damascus or Canossa? Now even the press, after 3 years of quasi soviet"patriotic"kowtowing has finally discarded its vows of silence, if not outright adoration, and from George Will to Bob Novak, we read that something is indeed rotten in the kingdom.
The ice floes are breaking .
What triggered the great iceberg runoff? Was it the incredible ineptitude of a gutted government faced with Katrina? The real hurt caused to seniors, a real voting group, by the Medicare reform, the Abramoff, DeLay, Cunningham, Valerie Plame, or Claude Allen scandals?
Maybe the war in Iraq is not going according to plan? Or is the citizenry tired of waiting for Bin Laden's arrest and the discovery of WMDs? Perhaps domestic spying, the ruin of America's reputation abroad, or a surfeit of arrogance.
Whatever the reason, the icebergs are melting faster than predicted, sea levels are rising and barring an October "surprise", (get the duct tape ready) it looks as if the Democrats might be in charge of Committees , hearings and subpoenas next fall. Chairman Conyers, Chairman Rangel, get ready , set, go!Ouch!
I bet you that the campaign motto on the Republican side will be: "vote Republican or Bush will be impeached".
Whatever happens, we still have the blossoms, and the Green and Gold! Go Mason!
