Incubateurs

Je reviens d'un petit voyage instructif en Caroline du Nord, l'État voisin. Cet État américain était connu pour ses plantations de coton, de tabac et ses filatures, toutes activités rendues obsolètes par la mondialisation. Un État à majorité noire (descendants des esclaves des dites plantations). Au lieu de se lamenter, de réclamer des subsides fédéraux ou d'instituer des RMI , ils se sont construit un "Triangle de la Recherche". Grand comme un département français, cette zone repose sur trois grandes universités: Duke (privée), et UNC Chapel Hill et NC State , toutes deux Universités publiques de l'État de Caroline du Nord.

Un grand absent: L'État Fédéral. Pas un centime d'aide , pas l'ombre d'un plan .

Dans ce triangle de la recherche, on met en contact permanent des chercheurs universitaires, professeurs ou étudiants, des capital-risqueurs, c.à.d. des investisseurs, ainsi que des spécialistes de l'entreprises. Ces gens là se retrrouvent dans des incubateurs ou leurs rencontre permet des "startups", des jeunes pousses, ou si l'on veut de jeunes entreprises. Les profs et les élèves prennent des brevets, vendent des licences ou se lancent dans l'entreprise. Un sondage révèle que 90% des étudiants de Caroline du Nord veulent fonder leur propre boite!
Le résultat, c'est l'explosion du génie génétique avec l'invention de la reconstruction de tissu humain (on a eu la démonstration de la reconstruction d'une vessie à partir de cellules souches), ou la fabrication d'ordinateurs portables à 80 euros pour les enfants du tiers-monde etc...
A Raleigh-Durham, pas de manifestation anti CPE, pas de fauchage des champs d'essai OGM, on bosse. On invente, on brevète, on lance des entreprises.
Le chômage est de moins de 2%.
Il n'y a pas de miracle.
Aux dernières nouvelles, ce qui unissait Ségolène Royal , Sarkozy et Bayrou, c'était que tous étaient unanimes pour rejeter le système américain......

America is from Mars. Indeed!

Once again there is a gun massacre. This time, it is on the pleasant campus in the peaceful countryside of Virginia. 33 of the young hopeful students of Virginia Tech and their teachers gunned down... Virginia which is also the headquarters of the National Rifle Association. Already, before the corpse of these students was cold, the Virginia gun owners association was defending the right to bear arms. The NRA, on the same day was posting on its website: "Today is a great day for gun owners". And the Commander-in-thief came on tv to make sure to say this has nothing to do with the right to bear arms. The same president who let a law banning the very weapons of the VT massacre, lapse!
The yokels and good ole boys of Virginia who read the 2nd amendment as the right to have war weapons, cannot even read. Especially not the 18th century english of the Constitution: "...the right to bear arms FOR A WELL REGULATED MILITIA". In other words, so that the newly independents Americans could defend themselves against the resurgence of Georges III. Automatic weapons are sold in K-Marts and Wal-Mats all over Virginia. They are sold to every Tom Dick and Harry. They could also buy weapons in "gun fairs" where no background check is necessary.
It is the same ignorant bunch that reads the 17th century Bible as meaning that blacks are inferior and it is OK to put criminals to death, that God hates fags and chooses presidents.
It really makes you want to become American! Or Virginian.....a state that recently voted to allow kids to bring guns in the trunk of their cars ...IN HIGH SCHOOL!!!!

And if the right to bear arms was really there in order to topple tyrants, war criminals and other associated usurpers, where were all the Good Ole Boys when G.W. Bush rigged his election, declared an illegal war and canceled habeas corpus, not to mention killing over 600,000 Iraqis (although the latter are merely Arabs)?

Instead of banning too much skin on TV, fainting at "wardrobe malfunctions" and preaching abstinence, Americans should be a little more from Venus and a little less from Mars . Instead of being prudes, they ought to be more discriminating about the constant violence that mars their inane sitcoms where the number of violent death per evening defies the imagination.
Finally, it is well established that when a Nation goes to war, the level of violence in its streets increases significantly.

Neige de Pâques

Joyeuses Pâques!
Les habitants de Washington se sont réveillés sous la neige. "Noêl au balcon, Pâques aux tisons" disait le vieux proverbe.Après les quelques jours de véritable été, c'est surprenant, mais pas inattendu.

Au cours de la dernière campagne présidentielle américaine, G.W. Bush était opposé à John Kerry. Ce dernier, ancien du Vietnam où il s'était comporté en héros au commandes d'une cannonière, avait essayé de faire le contraste entre ses médailles et le comportement de Bush qui, lui, avait échappé au Vietnam grâce à son papa sénateur. Le parti de Bush monta une campagne financée par Sam Fox, un milliardaire, qui fit croire que Kerry était un faux héros, n'avait pas droit à ses médailles,n'avait jamais sauvé ses camarades etc. Comme les mensonges les plus éhontés sont toujours crus, Kerry a perdu et le chef de file des menteurs a eu un deuxième mandat. Pour remercier son commanditaire, Bush a nommé Sam Fox comme ambassadeur en Belgique, bien que ce dernier ne soit pas qualifié, ne soit pas diplomate, ne parle aucune langue étrangère. Le sénat, qui doit donner son accord, le lui a refusé.
Profitant des vacances parlementaires, Bush a secrètement utilisé son pouvoir de décret pour arbitrairement confirmer Sam Fox. Il ira représenter Bush à Bruxelles.

Autre distortion de la vérité, mais plus amusante: Ce matin Radio France a annoncé que les USA étaient inquiets d'une prochaine récession. Mais dans le développement de l'information, on entend qu'un nombre record d'emploi a été crée en mars, 190 000 au lieu des 100 000 escomptés, que le chômage est tombé à 4,4%, que le déficit budgétaire sera réduit plus vite que prévu , et que les craintes d'inflation ont disparu. Ils rajoutent que le secteur de la construction, frappé récemment par l'éclatement de la bulle du foncier, a retrouvé son équilibre, pour conclure que le danger de la récession s'estompe.......

la presse américaine a les même biais quand il s'agit de la France. Le vol triomphal de l'Airbus A 380 à Washington était accompagné d'un commentaire soulignant surtout les difficultés d'EADS et tous les problèmes engendrés par un avion "trop gros". Même traitement pour le TGV est. Son record a été à peine mentionné en page 19 du Washington Post sur 2 lignes! Le Muncie Star, le Petersburg Progress Index ou autres journaux plus lus par les populations en région ne sont même pas au courant.Le commentaire soulignait surtout le coût, le danger, et l'inadaptation de ce train aux conditions américaines.

Aprè cela on s'étonnera de l'anti-américanisme en France ou du "French-bashing" aux USA.

Speed record

As I woke up this morning, I heard on RFI that the TGV had broken a speed record, at 574 kmh, on the eastern line. This should be good news for France, in its hour of self-doubt, and in the last phase of a gloomy election campaign.It is certainly good news for me, since the new HST line is the one I need to link Paris with Thionville.Coming a few days after the successful visit of the Airbus A 380 to Washington, it demonstrates, once more, the excellence of French engineering. If our school system taught French children a little bit more economics, trade, profit, and investment, instead of strikes, demonstrations, and class warfare, perhaps we could even sell a couple of these wonderful train sets to the rest of the world in the future. In the meantime, my thanks go to the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg.
They built and took a financial participation in the Paris-Luxembourg spur of the Eastern TGV line. This will allow me to use that magic carpet all the way home.

Meanwhile, back in the Nation`s capital, the cherry blossoms are at their peak. Spring is definitely in the air.The democrats in Congress have finally decided to cut off funds for the war. Poor hapless Alberto Gonzales (the author of torture memos and past purveyor of dozens of death sentences to then Governor Bush of Texas), is on his way out.The rats are leaving the sinking ship.
